AI and Disinformation in Africa and Latin-America session
Joint session by GIZ/FAIR Forward & D4D Hub AI Working Group.

Disinformation and especially online disinformation is spreading widely, with significant political effects and even inciting violence (online and in the real world). Disinformation is causing an erosion of trust in institutions and in media, hampering everyone’s right to access verified information and their ability to take informed decisions. AI-Applications boost the problem not only by increasing opportunities to create realistic AI-generated fake content, but also, by facilitating the dissemination of disinformation to a targeted audience (political microtargeting) and at scale. The issue of AI & disinformation is particularly important, notably at times of the super-election-year 2024. According to the World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report 2024, misinformation and disinformation pose the greatest global risk to the international community in the short term.

The panel discusses the effects of AI-based disinformation in Latin-American and Africa and shares actions and experiences from AI project in the region.
